Mahama gradually losing credibility – NPP

Deputy Communication Director of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Richard Asante has made a scathing remark about the National Democratic Congress’ 2020 Election Flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, stating that he is beginning to lose his accolade as former president for engaging in a banter with Ghana’s Electoral Commission in recent times.

According to him, the former president and his party went to court to challenge the credibility of the 2020 polls and failed to adduce substantial evidence to that effect hence the claim that one million ballot papers were stuffed in favour of the NPP is baseless.

It will be recalled that the former president, in an interview on TVXYZ on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 indicated that he is well poised and composed to mount the witness box and testify against the electoral commission of Ghana should an independent body constituted by the Economic Community Of West African States(ECOWAS) to investigate him.

But responding to the former president in an interview on A1 Radio’s Daybreak Upper East Show today, November 10, 2021, Dr. Asante said Ghanaians should not take the allegations of Mahama and the NDC as party serious since his credibility is gradually waning.

“I think that Former President Mahama in his conduct and utterances within the last couple of months is literally devaluing the office of the former president and also undermining the EC as a state institution. Former President Mahama and the NDC had an opportunity to go to the court to throw all those allegations and all those things that they complained about before the court; they did not go there with even a single pink sheet. They did not adduce a [piece] of single evidence to show that the EC did anything untoward. He himself did not make himself available before the court to be cross-examined about the matters that he so eloquently talks about anytime he gets access to the microphone and that has been the thing that goes on to undermine his credibility. The point is that he is going through a credibility crisis,” Dr. Asante said.

In his recent ‘Thank You’ of the Western Region, Mr. Mahama alleged that “more than one million extra ballot papers were printed, which the EC claimed happened by mistake but on the day of the elections, some more than one million ballot papers had already been secretly thumb printed in favour of the NPP”. This pronouncement by made by Mr. Mahama elicited a quick response from the Electoral management body.
At a press conference, Dr. Bossman Asare said the continuous silence by the EC on the matter would create room for the public to lose confidence in the Electoral Commission, and thus urged the police to investigate those allegations made by the NDC.

Speaking to Samuel Mbura on the same issue, the Deputy Upper East Regional Communications Officer of the NDC, Mr. Sunday Caspar Kampuli, reiterated his flag bearer’s statement that the NDC intends to make the Electoral Commission number one in Africa. He said the opposition party wants, what he described as, irregularities in elections to be corrected.

He stated that the people who lost their lives on the election day is a blot on Ghana’s democracy and that they (NDC) are doing everything to ensure issues of that nature do not recur in the 2024 elections.
