Why donate to Korle-Bu when Northern Hospitals lack more – Mahama asked

A Political Observer based in the Upper East Region, Tijani Paul Babatunde has questioned former President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to his, [the latter’s], political career. Mr. Babatunde wondered whether the former President hoped to garner votes from the Northern half of the country, should he emerge as the 2024 Flagbearer for the NDC.

Babatunde was bewildered by Mr. Mahama’s move to donate Glucometers to the Diabetes Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to the neglect of hospitals in the five regions of the North.

It will be recalled that the former President as part of his 63rd Birthday celebration donated Glucometers to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to help facilitate healthcare delivery.

But Mr Babatunde argued that the donation could have been much appreciated if done in any hospital in the five regions of the North as healthcare delivery in such hospitals are poor compared to Korle Bu.

He said “Korle Bu since in the wake of COVID-19, it has been receiving donations upon donations more than any hospital in the five regions of the North. If one goes to these hospitals, health workers are struggling to take care of patients. Overcrowding, inadequate beds and the rest, yet, the former president sees it fit to donate to Korle Bu and not the Upper East Region Hospital which has been standing there without equipment to operate. I doubt if he wants full endorsements from some of us up North, come 2024 elections.”

“It is a known fact that majority of people in the five regions of the North did not vote for him in the 2016 election because he failed to bring development to them. Now, you are tickling yourself to come back hopefully in 2024 and instead of you using the little opportunities to break the bitterness some of us still have against you, you are rather repeating them. Who advises him?”, he asked.

Stressing on his disappointment on the former President’s donation, Mr Babatunde said “What even bore me is when there are funerals, he will come and mourn with the bereaved families. But for him to come and celebrate his birthday with them or us here and perhaps do some donations to facilities that need support; he will not do that.”
