Former Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament and a leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Prof. Mike Ocquaye, has proposed the need for a West African Electoral Commission to help solve the problem of bloated register in West African countries.

His proposal comes in after the New Patriotic Party Thursday took their calls for a new voters’ register in Ghana international, by calling on the international community and Presidents of other West African countries to push the electoral commission and the ruling Government to provide a new voters’ register for Ghana.

In an interview with Azongo Albert on A1 radio’s Day Break Upper East Show Friday, Prof Ocquaye explained that setting up a West African Electoral Commission will provide Africa with a common voters’ register which will prevent foreigners from voting in other countries.

“The creation of a West African Electoral Commission will sanitize electoral processes not only in Ghana but also in West Africa. The West African electoral commission will compile a common voters’ register and with that, if a foreigner comes to vote in another country it will be easily identified and such individuals will be apprehended.”

The former Deputy Speaker of Parliament noted that, during his tenure in Parliament he proposed this initiative which was taken up by the ECOWAS parliament but could not come into fruition.

He however expressed his believe, that with the overwhelming evidence produced by the NPP showing a huge number of other foreign nationals been registered in Ghana’s voters’ register, the ECOWAS parliament will reconsider visiting his initiative.

The astute politician mentioned that the reason for NPP going international with their call is to expose the fraudulent nature of the electoral process in Ghana to the international community and push them to protest the electoral process.

He argued that since the issue was a criminal and a cross-border issue, he expects the Interpol and other security services in the country pick up people involved to aid them in weeding out these corrupt practices which have characterized electoral processes in Africa.

He underscored the need for the Peace council, Muslim leaders and all stakeholders to add their voices to their call for a new voters’ register to bring an end to the corrupt electoral process that has bedeviled the country over the years.
