Increase in E-Services necessitated introduction of E-Levy – Binduri Mp

The Member of Parliament for Binduri Constituency in the Upper East Region Abdullai Abanga has explained that the government’s insistence on the ‘controversial’ E-Levy is because of the increase in Electronic transactions in the country.

Mr. Abanga, who spoke on Daybreak Upper East Show on A1 Radio, said the government needs to raise revenue to foster national development thus triggering the action of taxing electronic services to be able to finance government businesses.

“Government, whether NDC or NPP, the President does not have his own money whatsoever. What the government runs with, is taxes. Currently if you look at the 2022 budget the government estimates expenditure to be ghc145bn and from the Government’s projection, we are able to raise 100bn from our taxes and other sources so there is a deficit of 45bn, so how do we finance that?” he quizzed

Buttressing his point, the Legislator stressed, “that is why the government has said that with the economy now can we employ the possibility of raising revenue from the Electronic side, currently you can see that almost everybody who is in Ghana do businesses using the electronic system so if you are a smart person and you see how the Economy has changed there is no doubt that you find a way of raising revenue from that side”.

Meanwhile, earlier there was a publication by local media which sought to explain that the lawmaker insinuated that his constituents were ‘poor’ and therefore will not be affected by the E-Levy because they do transactions below the Ghc 100.00.

Responding to this, Mr. Abanga revealed that during the Christmas holidays he had the opportunity to travel around his constituency and realised that “most” of the transactions were below the Ghc 100.00 threshold.

“i went to Binduri and comb around the whole Binduri for three weeks from December to January and what I was seeking to let the listeners understand is that, so when I was in my constituency combing around I discussed with them and I asked them whether amongst most of us here whether we usually in a day will transfer Ghc 100.00 to another person, I did that and obviously most of them within our transaction are below, I am not saying there are no rich people in Binduri, of course, there are” he rebutted.
