The government’s appetite for spending has been described as nothing short of frivolous, needless and profligate. An Economist, Bismark Osei who could not hide his displeasure about the situation said “the spending by the Akufo-Addo government is disgusting, very disgusting”.

He said under the former administration, government expenditures used to max out around ghc60 billion but under the current political dispensation, government expenditure has increased to an average of ghc92 billion per year. “You will ask yourself, where is this expenditure coming from? We have a Minister for Aviation, Minister for Transport, Minister for Railways and Minister for Roads and Highways. What sort of sense does this thing make? Can we not collapse it into one Ministry?” he quizzed

He continued to cite the Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Defense and Ministry for National Security as further examples of wasteful government spending.

“If you look at Free SHS, someone got aggregate 40 and is attending school. Can we not sit down and cut down some of this spending? NABCO, you have put 100,000 people and you are paying them. Could you not use them to collect property taxes and use some of the money to pay them? Look at the nursing and teacher trainee allowances. Consider also, the Auditor General’s report. There are a lot of frivolous expenditures that government should look at,” he said.
