The Upper East Regional Director of Ghana Health Service, Dr. Emmanuel Kofi Dzotsi has called on the general public to report symptoms of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) to the nearest health facilities for early treatment to avoid complications.

Cerebrospinal meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges of both the brain and the spinal cord specifically an infectious often epidemic and fatal meningitis caused by the meningococcus called also cerebrospinal fever.

It is an air-borne disease that is most feared because it is transmittable, fatal and spreads at an extremely fast pace.

Dr. Dzortsi’s comment came following the excessive heat that is usually experienced in the 5 regions of the North between February and June.

Speaking on to Mark Kwasi Ahumah Smith on Daybreak Upper East Show on A1 Radio, Dr. Dzortsi entreated the public to report early signs of the disease for treatment.

He said “all that we call on people is that if you have fever headache, report early to the nearest health facilities so that you will be provided with the needed care”.

He added that the Directorate has retrained its staff up to tackle the disease.

“We have given refresher training to all our staff in the health facilities. We have put in a monitoring plan for early detection of the cases. We are also ensuring that we pick up the cases early, do the laboratory testing and confirmation so treatment can start on time. We have enough medicine to treat them.”

Dr. Dzortsi has therefore called on the media and other relevant stakeholders to step up the education on CSM to ensure that people stay in well-ventilated places.
