Some 340,000 people aged between 15 and 35 in the Upper West Region are without jobs. This means that these people are unable to earn an income and as such, cannot support national development. To ensure that these people get jobs, the Ghanaians are being asked to reconsider their stance on the E-levy and make payments to ensure that the government’s YouStart programme is brought to fruition.
Speaking at the E-levy Town Hall Meeting at Wa, the Upper West Regional Capital, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, has expressed shock that the 8 NDC MPs have decided to fight against the E-levy. Their fight, against the E-levy, the Minister said, is a fight against government ghc 10 billion commitment to the YouthStart adding again that the fight against the E-levy is a fight against youth employment.
“If you make ghc 100,000 of transfers a year, and I take ghc 1,500 is that too much to warrant an insurrection? We have 340,000 within the age bracket of 15 and 35 with serious issues of unemployment. With 8 of our MPs coming from the NDC, what reasons will they have to stop an E-levy which is looking at a ghc 10 billion intervention with YouStart to get at the issue of unemployment”.
“You hate NPP all you want, what about the 340,000 people who need jobs? What is the reason? There are somethings I have to do. I have to report to you on a regular basis, i need to close in the gaps of leakages, but it does not mean that we should not move ahead in a world in which e-commerce is going to be the order of the day”.
“What is the reason for any of these MPs to say no, whatever argument you have, we would not do it?” he quizzed.
