While the presence of two major mining firms in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region means that there would be jobs for people resident in the area, mining within the area is having some devastating moral effect on young people in the area.

Thomas Pearson Wuni, the DCE for Talensi explained that because young boys are able to come into so much money within very short periods, it is common to find a young boy, sometimes as young as 18 years, with 2 or 3 wives.

Mr. Pearson Wuni was worried about the possible social, economic and health implications of such actions.

He said because most of the ‘businesses’ of most of the boys are not properly regulated mining schemes, the economic statuses are extremely volatile. Also, because these young people have no financial literacy, they tend to spend all the earn in a few days with the mindset that, they will always be able to make more.

The economic challenge therein is, should the monies of these young individuals run out, they would have huge families that they are unable to cater for; a situation that could pose security risks.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East, the DCE said to add salt to injury, parents of girls who become second wives or third wives are unwilling to help break the trend because of the financial benefits that they may be getting from the husbands of their daughters.

Mr. Pearson Wuni called for concerted efforts to help address the situation a hand.
