PURC advocates training and licensing of plumbers by GWCL

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) is advocating the retraining and certification of plumbers by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL). This would mean that plumbers who would be interested in connecting clients to the GWCL’s system or expanding the connection of same would be properly trained, regulated and licensed by the Company.

The move would help reduce the waste of treated water from the GWCL while ensuring that such connections are done professionally. It would be similar to the strategy that has been employed by the utility providers in the energy sector.

The Executive Secretary of the PURC, Dr. Ishmeal Ackah shared these thoughts when he spoke to the media as part of a day’s familiarization tour of the Upper East Region.

“We have engaged management [of the GWCL] to first, not only look at registering but also training of some of the local plumbers. At the national level, PURC would also pick up with the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources and the headquarters of the GWCL to see if we can duplicate what others are doing, especially in the energy sector to train and certify plumbers. This is so that if you do not have a certificate, you do not even engage in plumbing work,” he said.

Dr. Ackah also disclosed that PURC has begun the use of a mobile application that would be used to track the work of utility companies.

“We also have an app that we are going to use to do assessments [of utility companies] in all regions, every quarter. What we are going to do is to look at the number of complaints received, how many were resolved and how long it took to resolve the complaints and then rank them and publish,” he said.
