Education and Management Expert, Nii Armah Ardey is yet again calling out the Akufo-Addo led administration for failing to live up to its promises.

It would be recalled that the NPP in its 2016 Election Manifesto promised to facilitate the building of affordable housing units in collaboration with the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and other teacher associations.

Subsequently, similar promises were made by the President in 2017. The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey also reiterated the government’s promise on affordable housing units for teachers.

It would again be recalled that President Akufo-Addo, speaking at the 6th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in Kumasi on Tuesday, January 4, promised to build 10,000 housing units for teachers.

Mr Ardey said the government had failed at every turn to address the many accommodation issues teachers are faced with.

His comments come on the back of directives from the Ghana Education Service for teachers to pay 10 per cent of their basic salaries as rent for the occupation of government bungalows.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East today, March 16, 2022, Mr. Ardey said if the government had committed to building the many affordable housing units that it had promised over the years, the current directive may not have angered the teachers as much as it has now.

Meanwhile, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) is insisting that it will not comply with the directive from the GES stating that it is unreasonable to burden the already financially incapacitated teacher.
