Times’ll be tough, food’ll be expensive; brace yourselves – Agric Consultant warns

Emmanuel Wullingdool, an Agric Consultant who doubles as the Executive Director for the Centre for Women and Nutrition (CWAN) has said he “largely” agrees with the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) that suggested that the prices of food would be incredibly high with the likelihood of severe shortages.

In fact, PFAG encouraged individuals and families who can afford, to stock up food products that would last till 2023.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East, Mr. Wullingdool said the picture painted by the group may not be far from the truth. He was particularly worried about the availability and affordability of fertilizers in the upcoming planting season.

“Fertilizer is one of the major input products we use in the food production process. The subsidized prices have also heightened the usage of fertilizers. Over the years, the subsidies made it cheaper for farmers and so they have grown to use more of it. Now that the subsidies have been reviewed and the prices have gone up, it is going to come to many farmers as a challenge in terms of how they are going to access these critical inputs”.

“That is where I see the peasant farmers coming from. If you now have the inputs going up, it means that farmers may not be able to cultivate the same acreages that they were doing because their cost of production is going up,” he said.
