Some major roads in the upper east regional capital Bolgatanga have deteriorated to a deplorable state and posing danger to motorists and pedestrians. The township roads that have been badly affected include the O.A Street that leads to Zuarungu and the Soe Street amongst others.
Heavy rains have rendered some other roads in the municipality unmotorable. Amongst these include the Ssnit Affordables Street with some newly constructed roads not being spared.
The asphalting has been cleaned up at many places leaving in its wake pot holes laden roads exposing motorists to danger.
Some unhappy motorists and pedestrians who spoke to a1radioonline.com said this only shows the shoddy quality of work undertaken by contractors. They accused the Urban Roads Department and the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly of failure to fix the roads and hence the fast destruction that occurs on the roads as a result of heavy rains.
Most of the roads which were repaired a little over a year ago by the ritual exercise of merely patching with gravel and chippings have developed huge cracks and craters. The road leading to Estates from the Fountain Gate Chapel has begun deteriorating. The road leading to Zuruangu is amongst the most dangerous road as motorists and drivers dribble pot holes in a quest to avoid bumping into them. This situation exacerbates during early hours of the day and late afternoons when scores of people are in a rush headed to the offices, market and schools or headed back home.
The roads around the Regional Hospital are no different. Construction work at the hospital has worsened the situation leaving patients and visitors with no choice but to wade through the deluge anytime it rains.
The roads leading to peri-urban communities such as Zaare, Nyariga and Yorogo are in a more deplorable state. The rains have washed off the concrete slaps on the bridge linking Nyariga to Aguusi leaving motorists with no choice but to dice with death everyday on this stretch of road.
Indignant residents are demanding that, contractors who undertook the projects be sanctioned to deter others. This they say is the only way to wake up the contractors from slumber while calling on the municipal assembly and urban roads department to immediately fix the already bad roads before they reach a critical state of hopelessness.
