The Overlord of the Buru-Navio Traditional Area, Navio Pio Pe Adams Kwarase Asongojem Parijei Adurigola II is calling on his colleague chiefs in the Upper East Region to rise up against the disrespect they receive, particularly from politicians.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East, the Navio Pio stated his utter disgust for the treatment chiefs receive from politicians. He said the postures, mannerisms and speeches of the politicians are a clear show of disrespect for traditional rulers.

To make things worse, he explained that chiefs are only remembered when elections draw near. During the campaign periods, individuals and groups seeking to be elected or re-elected forge cordial relationships with the traditional authorities but the moment the elections are completed, they [the politicians] have no regard for the chief, particularly when they assume office.

“They will only come to your palace when it is election time. If they [the politicians] want us to work together, they should learn how to respect us. Chieftaincy is the highest office in this world. Even the president is under a chief. If you are a Minister, an MP, you are under a chief and you power has a limit; four years or 8 years.”

“If you are on a skin, unless you die. Even if you die, the palace is still there. Once an MP loses power, it may take several years and you won’t get an MP from the area. But as for chiefs, it is very difficult to lose a skin in that particular chief palace,” he said.

The Navio Pio encouraged the politicians “to try and let us work together to bring Upper East to a level that people will admire us.”

Earlier, the Navio Pio Pe Adams Kwarase Asongojem Parijei Adurigola II has expressed some disquiet about the continued disrespect for chiefs in the Upper East Region.

He also was worried about the general decline of respect for the elderly in society.

“Before, when you even meet an older person, you might not even know the person, but you give respect to that person. We have to realize that not only your mother, father, teacher or mallam can bless you. Respect alone can bring you a lot of blessings.”
