Constituency Secretary for the National Democratic Congress in the Garu Constituency of the Upper East Region, Hon. Thomas Martey Laari has said a decision by members of the party in the constituency to have a fresh parliamentary candidate for the constituency on November 7 will not come as a surprise.

According to him, the party’s fortunes in the parliamentary elections from 2008 have continuously dwindled and believe that with expansion of the Electoral College to include all card bearing members of the party, a change in candidate for next year’s elections will not come as a surprise.

Hon. Martey Laari was speaking to a1radio’s Azongo Albert in an exclusive interview.

He mentioned that the five people contesting are all individuals with capabilities and exquisite track records which will play key roles in determining the winner come November 7 when the party goes to the polls.

He hailed the level of sanity of the campaigning process regardless of the seat being a keenly contested one and was of the believe that the candidates will continue to be decorous in their electioneering campaigns leading up to the November 7 elections.

Mr. Martey maintained the party is adequately prepared for the upcoming exercise, mentioning that, they have taken delivery of books for the 42 polling stations and are currently undertaking the exhibition exercise.

He lamented the inability of some party members to partake in the upcoming exercise because they could not be registered due to the short period the membership registration took but added that those individuals could register after the elections.

“It saddens my heart that some party members have been disenfranchised because they were unable to register when the exercise was going on. The exercise took place in a short space and many individuals who thronged to the party to register were unable to register because the time had elapsed and our books were also finished. We did not deliberately disenfranchise them as some people think, it was the time frame used for the registration. Members of the NDC who were unable to register will be registered after the elections so that they can partake in subsequent elections.”

Four persons including Hon. Thomas Assibi, Hon. James Kombat, Hon. Albert Akuka and Hon. Moses Kanduri are seeking to unseat the incumbent Member of Parliament, Hon. Dominic Azumah who is seeking a seventh term in office.
