EC must repair damaged credibility – Dumor

Former Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority Professor Ernest Dumor has stated that Ghana’s Electoral Commission has a “credibility problem” and must focus on repairing that damaged reputation.

“With all due respect, we have a credibility problem, as far as the Electoral Commission is concerned, so, we have to find a strategy to win back that confidence, that trust that the EC had when we started in 1993 as a Commission, namely: Making sure that all stakeholders know exactly what the EC is doing in order to deliver on its service, and to deliver efficiently and effectively to the satisfaction of all stakeholders,” Professor Dumor told host of Morning Starr Nii Arday Clegg Tuesday.

His comments come after calls by the opposition New Patriotic Party for the country to have a new voters’ register ahead of the 2016 elections.

Leading members of the NPP including the flagbearer Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo have on several occasions stated that the EC has lost its credibility.

But Prof. Dumor speaking on the Morning Starr added: “I have said all the time that you make the best out of what you have by creating trust among the stakeholders, so, even if we were to spend money creating a new register, we’ll still have the same problems”.
