A sod cutting ceremony has been held in Bongo for the construction of a 50 bed capacity pediatric ward for the Bongo District Hospital.

The Bongo District Hospital has been functioning without a children’s ward since the facility got upgraded from a health centre to the status of a hospital over 15 years ago. The situation has compelled management of the hospital to combine both women and children in one ward and hence the pairing of patients on the hospital beds. Currently, two patients share one bed in the female ward of the hospital.

The project is funded by well-meaning citizens of Bongo, philanthropists and friends. A former member of parliament for Bongo Constituency who is spear heading a fund raising initiative to put up the structure Hon. Simon Alangde told  a1radioonline.com  that so far about seventy thousand Ghana cedis (Ghc 70,000.00) has been realized and is being injected into the project. He noted that some well-meaning citizens of the Bongo area, governmental and non-governmental organizations have supported with funds and materials while appealing to many others to support this needy course.

Speaking at the ceremony, the medical superintendent of the Bongo District Hospital Dr. William Gudu expressed delight for the support by some well-meaning Bongo citizens which is expected to bring to an end the constraint of pairing patients on beds as a result of the unavailability of a kids ward.

According to Dr. Gudu, the facility is the only hospital in the Bongo District and has a catchment population of about Eighty eight Thousand, Six Hundred and Seventy- seven (88,677) people. It provides both inpatients and outpatients service to the population of the district and has 80 beds and three wards.
