Zebila NDC decides: I’m the best candidate to take over from Cletus Avoka – Maxwell Abgambilla

“When I realised that the Honourable Avoka wasn’t going to put himself forward, I looked at the situation and found that it is fitting for the people of Zebila to start a new beginning, that is, putting another person who has the potential to learn and grow and to be able to put Zebila back on the map and do as much as he [Cletus Avoka] has done or better. I find that, by the grace of God, I qualify to that extent.”

Maxwell Ziyerley Abgambilla, one of seven individuals who have successfully filed their nominations ahead of the NDC’s primaries in the coming weeks, made these comments when he spoke to Mark Smith on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show recently.

Mr. Abgambilla explained that, growing up, he had always had the passion to serve and to commit to making the lives of others easier. To this end, he’s always put himself up for leadership positions. His decision to contest the Zebila primaries for the National Democratic Congress, is no different, the private legal practitioner said.

A total of seven people successfully filed nominations in the Zebila constituency. They are; Dr. Simon Batamya Aseno, Mr. Bernard Wintimah Azumah, Lawyer Maxwell Ziyerley Agbambilla, Mr. Ebenezer Alumire Ndebilla, Mr. Nelson Ndeba Ndebugre, Mr. Abukura Asumda, Hon. Agbango Simon Ayande. [Filing of Nominations, NDC – 2023]

Cletus Avoka, the current MP, bowed out of politics. When he spoke to A1 Radio, he mentioned that the decision was to allow younger individuals the opportunity to lead the party.

Mr. Abgambilla explained that out of the 7, he stands tall.

“There are seven of us in Zebila who have filed. With the greatest respect to the six of them, I find that I stand taller in everything. The criteria that any reasonable person would look out for, to send someone to Parliament, I stand tall,” he said.

Asked who he thought were the criteria for qualification, in the eyes of delegates, as MPs, Mr. Agbambilla said, “There are so many things, but for me, there are two major ones. First, you must send someone who understands the workings of Parliament. [Someone] who is able to go there and contribute meaningfully to debates, and to parliamentary democracy. With the greatest of respect, I do not think there are any of the other six who can beat me to that.”

“The second aspect is someone who understands what it is that we need, or require. As I said, I grew up in the village. It was later in life that I moved to Accra. I come from a very humble beginning so it is no news to me when someone tells me that look, I went to bed hungry yesterday. I have gone to bed severally without food. If you understand what it is to be hungry, which unfortunately is the situation for the majority of people in the constituency, then I am in pole position to be able to contribute to solving their needs,” he said.

Additionally, Mr. Agbambilla said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regime had been marked by numerous unhealthy social, governance, economic, and political disasters. The party has thus become unattractive to young professionals who are interested in building political careers and fostering development at the local level.
