The Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, pledged to donate to the establishment of a hemodialysis centre at the Upper East Regional Hospital, a total of Ghc5,000. Again, the minister tasked all 15 MDCEs, with raising similar amounts towards the construction of the facility.

Mr. Yakubu made the pledge at the durbar to launch a fund-raising exercise.

It appears that the pledges made by the Upper East Regional Minister and on behalf of the MMDCEs are yet to be redeemed.

This came to light when Dr. Emmanuel Akatibo, the lead convener for the project, spoke to Mark Smith on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show.

Dr. Akatibo gently nudged all individuals and organisations that had made pledges to redeem them so that the processes leading up to the construction of the centre could be hastened.

“From the launch day up until now, and based on the records I got from our director of finance at the hospital, as of yesterday [Friday, April 7, 2023], the statement they had from the bank, they had received donations and contributions to the tune of about Ghc80,000. The biggest individual pledge that was done by Endswell Pharmacy, which was Ghc25,000 has been redeemed.”

“The other pledges are yet to be redeemed, including the Upper East Regional Council’s that was done through the Regional Minister and a few other individuals,” he said.

According to Dr. Akatibo, it is important that pledges be redeemed.

“There is still a long way to go. I know some of them were really committed to it. We are still very hopeful that as we move on, most of them will redeem their pledges. If we get at least two-thirds of the people to redeem their pledges and support, I am sure we can start something. We are still very hopeful. We know it is not a one-day project. I know it may take time, but I know we will get there,” he said.
