The Upper East Region is gearing up to host the highly anticipated 2023 May Day celebration, with preparations in full swing ahead of the event scheduled for Monday, May 1st. With the president and vice president expected to participate, the event is set to be held at the Jubilee Park in Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional capital.

“The Upper East Region is bracing to host its first national May Day event come Monday at the Jubilee Park. All national executive and national council members for both organised labour and TUC are in the region and would be there to grace the occasion. The special guest of honour for the workers day is His Excellency the President of Ghana. He would be accompanied by other state dignitaries, including the Vice President.”

The upcoming celebration will mark the first national May Day event for the region, a fact not lost on the Chairman of the Regional Planning Committee, Moses Awarikaro, who recently spoke with A1 Radio’s Mark Smith on the Day Break Upper East Show.

In his remarks, Awarikaro highlighted that all relevant stakeholders had been duly engaged and made ready for the big event, adding that the decision to hold the celebration in the Upper East Region was a reflection of the region’s immense potential when it comes to tourism.

“Hosting this year’s National May Day celebration in the Upper East Region is an opportunity to showcase the region’s immense potential, especially in the tourism sector,” Awarikaro stated. “We have made significant efforts to ensure that all stakeholders, including residents, artisans, and management in the hospitality sector, are prepared and ready for this event.”

With the theme for the celebration set as “Protecting incomes and pensions in an era of economic crisis: Our responsibility,” expectations are high, and the committee is working hard to ensure that the event is a resounding success.

While the excitement for the event is palpable, some artisans have expressed disappointment in the committee’s failure to formally inform them of the event. Secretary of the Bolgatanga Craft Village Leather Workers Association, Asiniba Godwin, stated that while they will put up their best efforts to showcase their craft, they would have appreciated more advanced notice of the event.

Despite the concerns of some artisans, however, the committee remains confident that the event will be a significant success, with a diverse range of dignitaries from different regions and countries expected to attend. All eyes will be on the Upper East Region come May 1st, as the nation celebrates its workers and the labour movement.
