The Upper East Regional Chairman of the Ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Anthony Namoo, has asserted that the fallout from the just-ended NPP superdelegates conference could be attributed to polling agents’ failure to garner the votes they promised their candidates.
He noted that in an attempt by some agents to cover up their failure, they created scenes at some voting stations. These situations were then exaggerated and reported to the flagbearer hopefules
According to Mr. Namoo, briefing about the incident in the North East Region, indicated that the issue was taken out of context.
“I have been briefed about the incident in the North East, and to all intents and purposes, it was blown out of proportion. A youth organiser goes in there to vote, and after casting his vote, he folds the ballot paper and raises it. Now, if you are a party agent and someone does something that you think is contrary, what you do is report it to the EC, the presiding officer, or the police who were there,” the chairman stated
“But if you, as an agent, accost the person, the person doesn’t know the motive behind why you are trying to accost him, so he also reacts because the person feels he is in danger of being attacked, and these things happen even in football,” he added
He was of the view that the flagbearer hopeful needed to cross-check what was reported to him because it has become common for people to give out false information just to cover up their own failure.
He advised all party agents to remain honest going forward into future elections for the true spirit of transparency to prevail, adding that Sir John’s adage that “fear delegates“ comes into play in every election and delegates will always have a way of disappointing.
It will be recalled that in a related incident, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, in a viral video that surfaced on Saturday, August 26, 2023, during the NPP`s superdelegates election, called out the names of the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo and the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Amidst threats, he claimed that his polling agent was sacked and chased out.
