Residents of the Zopeliga Community in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region have called on the government to, as a matter of urgency, smoothen the road with gravel to ease movement.
According to the residents, the road had not received any form of proper reshaping and graveling since it was constructed in the early 2000s and had had its gravel washed away by the torrential rains, thereby impeding movement.
They made this appeal in an interview with A1 News.
A visit to the road by A1 News revealed that parts of the road have been eroded and some of the bridges constructed have not been level with gravel, compelling vehicles to run over the metal plate of the bridge linking Zanlerigu community.
Mr. Norbert Yambire, a resident, said the situation is dire, especially now that the rains have set in and as such called for urgent action by the government.
“We have had a few rains, but when you look at the road, it is evident that things would definitely get worse because the place is already muddy and vehicles have started avoiding passing on the road and cutting into our farmlands, and this would soon create confusion between us as we can’t watch our crops being destroyed,” he said.
Maxwell Divom, the Assemblyman of the Zanlerigu-Dagliga Electoral Area, said apart from the fact that the deplorable road is impeding vehicular movement and impacting negatively on economic activities, the main bridge linking the two communities needed serious maintenance.
He said the floor concrete of the bridge had developed some cracks and needed urgent attention as it posed a lot of danger to the lives of residents and travellers.
Mr. Divom said he has reported the concerns of the residents to the District Assembly, and though the District Engineer came and assessed the bridge and admitted that there was a need for work to be done, they have yet to see that happen.
Ms. Agnes Anamoo, the District Chief Executive, said the Assembly was made aware of the plight of residents and travellers, but due to the unavailability of funds, work on the road has been put on hold.
She said her outfit was employing all efforts, including seeking external support to fix the road and the bridges.
