Ghana Tourism Authority celebrates Emancipation Day at Pikworo Slave Camp

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has celebrated the 2nd edition of the Emancipation Day ceremony at the Pikworo Slave Camp in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East region.

The event, which was on the theme “Unity and Resilience: Building a Stronger Community for a Brighter Future”, aimed to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved Africans and their descendants.

The Upper East Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Wisdom Ahadzie, noted that the celebration was part of efforts to package Ghana’s slavery history and promote heritage tourism in the region and the country as a whole. Mr. Ahadzie emphasized the importance of preserving the history of the slave trade and its impact on the local community.

“Ghana Tourism Authority Bolga office is aware of the dotted slave stories history around, and we will work together with all paramountcies to package for best experiences in the future. We can do it with the support of our head office and, of course, by all collaboration and partnership from individuals and companies.”

Speaking on behalf of the diaspora family in America, Thomas Riddick emphasized the need for the diaspora to return to Ghana and help develop their ancestors’ communities.

The ceremony brought together traditional performances, libations, and a guided tour of the camp. President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, Chiana Pio, Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III, called on Ghanaians to foster commitment, unity, and self-confidence in developing the nation as the ancestors did to end slavery in the country.

On behalf of the Upper East Regional Minister Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, Gerard Ataogye, the Kassena-Nankana West District Chief Executive, acknowledged the importance of the Emancipation Day celebration and underscored the need for the preservation of the Ghanaian cultural heritage and identity.
