Former President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the need for the removal of political interference to effectively combat corruption in Ghana.
Speaking at a media encounter in Bolgatanga, Mr. Mahama highlighted that the independence of anti-corruption institutions is paramount in the fight against corruption and its associated practices.
Addressing a gathering of journalists, the former president pointed out that political meddling often hampers the operations of anti-corruption bodies, undermining their ability to execute their mandates effectively.
He argued that for Ghana to make significant strides in eliminating corruption, these institutions must be allowed to operate autonomously, free from external pressures and influences.
“Corruption can be fought when political interference is taken out. Allowing the anti-corruption institutions to work is key to ending the practices of corruption and its related activities,” Mr. Mahama stated.
He further noted the importance of providing these institutions with the necessary resources, legislative backing, and operational freedom to carry out their duties without fear or favor.
Mr. Mahama also suggested that empowering civil society organizations and the media to play a more active role in exposing corruption could complement the efforts of anti-corruption bodies.
“Transparency and accountability should be the cornerstones of our governance. We need a collective effort from all sectors of society to tackle corruption head-on,” Mr. Mahama added.
