Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) is enhancing its educational programmes and infrastructure to better align with industry needs and improve the overall quality of education.
Richard Atia, the technical university’s Director of Academic Affairs, emphasized the institution’s commitment to delivering practical, industry-focused education that equips students with the skills required for today’s job market.
“Our approach is to offer hands-on training that directly responds to industry demands,” Mr. Atia explained.
“Before introducing any program, we consult with industry leaders to identify their needs and then incorporate these insights into our program development. This ensures that our graduates can seamlessly integrate into the workforce.”
In an interview with A1 Radio, Mr. Atia highlighted BTU’s focus on tactical-oriented training, supported by state-of-the-art laboratories that offer extensive practical experience alongside theoretical instruction.
He noted that the university’s current model emphasizes a 60 percent practical and 40 percent theoretical approach to produce well-rounded graduates. “We balance 60 percent practical training with 40 percent theory to ensure our graduates are competent and ready for industry challenges,” Mr. Atia stated.
BTU has recently upgraded its infrastructure with new facilities from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, including chairs, tables, computers, and smart boards. These enhancements are aimed at improving teaching and learning effectiveness. “The new equipment we’ve received will significantly promote effective teaching and learning,” Mr. Atia said.
The university also provides hostel facilities, although these are currently available on a first-come, first-served basis due to limited capacity. Mr. Atia mentioned that efforts are underway to expand these facilities to accommodate more students in the future.
By upgrading its programs and infrastructure, Bolgatanga Technical University is positioning itself as a leading institution that meets the evolving demands of the industry and supports the success of its students.
