On September 6, 2024, the Upper East Region celebrated its top journalists at the third edition of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards, held at the Blue Sky Hotel in Bolgatanga. The event, hosted by William Nlanjerbor Jalulah, Chairman of the Upper East GJA, recognized the achievements of nine journalists from the region.
A highlight of the evening was A1 Radio’s Equal Voices host, Humul-Khrusum Tahiru, who was the sole female awardee. She was honored as both Gender Reporter of the Year and Best Female Journalist of the Year, receiving plaques, cash prizes, citations, and a laptop for her outstanding contributions to journalism.
Madam Tahiru expressed her excitement and encouraged women in broadcasting to strive for excellence and remain undaunted by challenges and gender discrimination.
“I am extremely delighted to have won both the Gender Reporter of the Year and the Best Female Journalist of the Year awards. This recognition shows that women media practitioners in the Upper East Region are not left behind, and if we put ourselves forward, we will be supported. Remember, regardless of where you are or where you live, gender equality is a fundamental human right. It is critical for advancing a healthy society. If we use it well, we can reduce poverty, improve health, enhance education, and foster growth in entrepreneurship and all aspects of life,” she said.
The awards ceremony celebrated excellence in various journalistic fields, including health, education, agriculture, peace and security, human rights, sports, mining, and child rights, among others. The event also underscored the dedication and impact of journalists in the Upper East Region, encouraging every journalist to put forth their best efforts in their work.
