The Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO), in partnership with Climate Action Africa and funded by the Canadian government, is hosting a transformative youth leadership training in the Bolgatanga East District of the Upper East Region.
The training, titled “Youth Climate Leadership Training of Trainers,” is empowering 75 young people from three communities—Kandiga, Sirigu, and Bongo—with the knowledge and skills needed to address climate issues, lead their communities, and train others.
The intensive training focuses on period poverty, water adaptation, and climate leadership. Participants are being trained in menstrual and sexual health, menstrual cycle bracelet making, and various water and farming adaptation techniques such as zai pits, half-moons, and stone lines to support continuous farming during the dry season. Additional training includes home water filtration, tree planting techniques, climate adaptation, climate action, and climate leadership.
Regional institutions, including the Upper East Regional Health Directorate, the Department of Gender, and the Forestry Commission, have strongly supported the workshop. They are actively engaging with participants and contributing to the training’s success.
The program will conclude with a Durbar at the Rock Gardens in Bolgatanga on Friday, September 14, 2024. Paramount Chiefs from Kandiga, Sirigu, and Bongo, along with representatives from the Regional Health Directorate, Department of Gender, Forestry Commission, NGOs, and CSOs, will attend the event.
According to the organizers, the Durbar will celebrate the achievements of the 75 trained youth and mark a significant milestone in empowering them to lead in climate adaptation and gender equality within their communities. The event will also serve as a call to action for continued collaboration, support, and investment in youth-led climate initiatives.
