The Member of Parliament for the Nabdam Constituency, Dr. Mark-Kurt Nawaane, has expressed strong concerns about what he describes as the institutionalization of bribery under President Akufo-Addo’s administration.
According to Dr. Nawaane, bribery, which was previously conducted in secret and often carried out with fear of legal repercussions, has now become an openly practiced phenomenon. He alleges that operators, particularly members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), engage in bribery without fear of the law.
Dr. Nawaane asserts that, in the past, individuals involved in bribery feared being caught because the Constitution clearly condemns such practices. However, under the NPP government, bribery has turned into an “enterprise game,” with those involved acting with impunity.
The MP further lamented that one of the most troubling aspects of this trend is its infiltration into the country’s security recruitment processes.
According to Dr. Nawaane, young, promising individuals seeking security jobs are being asked to pay bribes of GH¢20,000 or more. He expressed concern that even after paying such exorbitant amounts, many still face rejection.
He emphasized that this practice, largely carried out by individuals connected to the governing party, persists because those involved are not held accountable by the law.
“The most worrying part is that even if a young person makes the payment, they still may not get the job,” Dr. Nawaane remarked. He added that the lack of legal consequences for these operators has emboldened them to continue engaging in bribery.
Dr. Nawaane made these statements after submitting his nomination form to the Electoral Commission in Nabdam, ahead of the December 7th general elections. Addressing his constituents, he urged the youth and members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to remain hopeful and committed to the party’s cause.
He assured them that under an NDC government, such corrupt practices would be eradicated and the country would be set on the right path. Dr. Nawaane called for a massive turnout in the upcoming elections to ensure victory for the NDC in 2025, promising that the party would “reset” the nation and restore integrity in governance.
