The Member of Parliament for Nabdam, Dr. Mark-Kurt Nawaane, has called for free medical treatment for cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) to help combat recurring outbreaks in northern Ghana.

Speaking on A1 Radio, Dr. Nawaane stressed the urgent need to address the disease, which remains a persistent public health challenge, particularly in the northern regions.

He highlighted the financial burden of CSM treatment, noting that while the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) covers basic care, some critical medications remain excluded.

“The drugs for treating this disease are expensive, and although the NHIS covers basic treatment, certain effective medications are not included. We need to do something about it,” he stated.

Dr. Nawaane urged the government to treat CSM as a public health emergency, arguing that free medical care would significantly aid vulnerable patients and help contain the disease.

His appeal comes amid reports of four suspected CSM cases in the Bolgatanga Municipality and 14 confirmed deaths in the Upper West Region.

The disease, which thrives in hot, dry conditions, often peaks during the Harmattan season, affecting communities in the northern belt.

Francisca Adongo, Bolgatanga Municipal Health Promotion Officer, echoed concerns about rising cases, urging residents to prioritize personal health and hygiene.

She advised the public to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as severe headaches, fever, and neck stiffness.

Health experts have long advocated increased public awareness and preventive measures, including vaccination campaigns, to curb the spread of CSM.

Dr. Nawaane’s proposal for free treatment aligns with these efforts, aiming to reduce the disease’s impact on vulnerable populations.

As the region grapples with the outbreak, stakeholders are calling for swift action to prevent further loss of life and ensure accessible healthcare for all.
