A 39-year-old mason, Felix Amoah, from the Doba community in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison with hard labor for stealing copper power cables worth Ghc195,000, belonging to the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).
The Navrongo District Magistrate Court on March 14, 2025, presided over by His Worship Famous Yao Amenyo, found Mr. Amoah guilty of two counts: causing unlawful damage and stealing. However, he was acquitted on the charge of conspiracy, as there was no evidence linking him to any accomplice.
Despite pleading not guilty, he was convicted after a full trial. He was sentenced to six months for causing unlawful damage and 15 months for stealing, with both sentences to run concurrently. In addition to serving jail time, the court ordered him to pay for the stolen cables after completing his sentence.
During the ruling, the judge noted that Mr. Amoah had shown no remorse throughout the trial and continuously denied all charges against him.
The prosecution, led by Prosecutor Emmanuel Darko Nimako, told the court that Mr. Amoah was arrested on October 13, 2023, along with his wife, Azamseyam Kadou, a seamstress. The wife was charged with aiding and abetting the theft of the Ghana Water Company’s power cables.
Investigations revealed that traces of the stolen cables were found leading to the convict’s residence, with drag marks visible across his compound wall. However, after reviewing the evidence, the court acquitted and discharged Madam Kadou of all charges. Following the sentencing, the convict was immediately transferred to the Navrongo Prison to begin his jail term.
