The Member of Parliament for the Talensi Constituency, Daniel Dung Mahama, has dispelled rumors circulating on social media that a youth group in the Talensi Constituency, representing the NDC in the Upper East Region, has set the party office ablaze following the appointment of the current constituency chairman, John Miillim Naawomya, as the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Talensi District Assembly.
Following the release of the second batch of DCE appointments by President John Dramani Mahama through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development on Friday, John Miillim Naawomya was named the next DCE for the Talensi District Assembly.
According to eyewitnesses, they woke up around 2:00 a.m. to see the office complex engulfed in flames, starting from the rooftop. The fire destroyed louver blades, ceiling fans, windows, doors, office stationery, books, documents, a TV set, and furniture—all reduced to ashes.
Speaking to a reporter from Bolga FM, Mr. Mahama outlined possible causes of the fire.
“We all woke up to find the party office engulfed in flames. We have no idea who started the fire. We’ve been battling electrical issues for some time now. I’ve heard claims that some NDC youth groups are unhappy with the chairman’s appointment as DCE and may have caused this. But I’ve been in the constituency for the past three days and haven’t seen any protest or group of youth demonstrating over anything.”
Mr. Mahama cautioned social media users against escalating the issue unnecessarily, insisting that the people of Talensi are happy with the appointment and will support Hon. Naawomya’s endorsement at the assembly level.
When asked about plans to rebuild the party office, Mr. Mahama stated that the current focus is to support security agencies to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice. He added that the party’s executive body has set up a committee to investigate the cause of the fire while awaiting the outcome of the police and other relevant authorities’ investigations.
Mr. John Miillim Naawomya was selected from among eighteen contenders to secure the President’s appointment as DCE.
