The Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Anthony Namoo, has attributed the party’s recent decline in electoral fortunes in the region to persistent political instability and violence, particularly in the Bawku Zone, which accounts for nearly 45% of the region’s voter population.
Speaking during the NPP’s National Thank You Tour held at the GNAT Hall in Bolgatanga and later at the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) Auditorium in Navrongo, Lawyer Namoo recounted the turbulent political environment that plagued the party’s campaign efforts in the 2024 elections.
According to him, the situation was worsened by restrictions from traditional authorities who placed bans on political gatherings, the destruction of NPP property, and, most tragically, targeted attacks on party members.
“We lost great men. Assembly Member Dramani Hamidu, Deputy Nasara Coordinator Asaana Jamilu, and Peter Ndezuri, a committed party sympathizer from Binduri, were all victims of politically motivated violence,” he stated.
He further highlighted that NPP-dominated areas, such as parts of Garu and Binduri, experienced significant displacements due to heightened political tensions, creating a climate of fear that hindered voter engagement and party activities.
“These acts of intimidation not only hurt our campaign but also democracy itself,” he added.
Despite the setbacks, Lawyer Namoo emphasized the need for healing, reconciliation, and unity.
He noted that the Thank You Tour was not just an expression of appreciation to the party’s faithful but a crucial step toward rebuilding and re-strategizing for the 2028 general elections.
“We must come together, stand firm, and believe in our collective strength,” he urged.
He also called on security agencies and government institutions to do more to ensure lasting peace in the Bawku Zone and beyond, stressing that political violence must not become the norm in Ghana’s democratic landscape.
Lawyer Namoo expressed optimism that, with unity and gratitude at the center of their efforts, the NPP can regain its stronghold and present a formidable challenge in the next elections.
