Today, 10th May 2025, Bolga Football Club celebrates 20 years of existence. The club was formed as a divisional football team and was originally known as Bolgatanga Football Club on 10th May 2005.
The club quickly became one of the most popular teams in the Upper East Region, delivering strong performances in the Regional Division Two League.
However, the club’s president later reverted it to a Juvenile Football Club within the Bolgatanga Municipality, a transition that has been in effect from 2009 to date.
Since then, the club has developed a host of talented players from the region and beyond. The success of the club at the juvenile level is a testament to its commitment to youth development and grassroots football.
Bolga FC made a return to divisional football during the 2016/2017 season as a Division Three club in the Upper East Region and qualified in its first attempt.
The club rejoined the Upper East Regional Division Two League with renewed energy, producing exciting performances and positive results.
In the 2017/2018 season, the club was joint top of the table before the season was prematurely truncated due to an exposé that rocked Ghanaian football.
The 2018/2019 to 2020 seasons were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The club had its first full season in 2020/2021, where it led the standings for nearly all matchdays except matchday two. The team qualified for the regional middle league, finishing third. One of the club’s main objectives for the season — qualifying for the MTN FA Cup — was successfully achieved.
Bolga FC won its first FA Cup match that season against Soccer Stars at the Paga Town Park with a 1–0 win, thanks to a goal by Dong Donald Dugbilla in the Round of 64.
In the Round of 32, the club faced Bolga All Stars at the Tamale Sports Stadium but lost 1–0, ending its FA Cup campaign.
In the 2021/2022 season, Bolga FC finished second to Sheaga A Real Town United and did not qualify.
The club bounced back in the 2022/2023 season, winning its zone and qualifying for both the middle league and the FA Cup. In the middle league, it finished second to Paga Afeni FC. Unfortunately, the club lost its FA Cup match against Tilli Awarey Stars 1–0.
In the 2023/2024 season, the club again failed to qualify, this time making way for Real Bolga United.
The most recent season, played with a restructured three-zone format instead of the usual four, marked the club’s poorest performance to date. The first round was particularly challenging, but with determination and the guidance of the club’s technical team, Bolga FC made a strong comeback in the second round, finishing third after 14 matches.
The club secured a total of 19 points, winning 5 matches, drawing 4, and losing 5. It scored 31 goals and conceded 22.
Bolga FC’s motto, in the local dialect, is “Tu Gubimaale”, which means “Together We Develop.” The club’s slogan is “The Royals,” and its traditional colours are yellow and black.
As Bolga FC looks ahead to the future, one thing is certain: its legacy will continue to grow, inspiring generations to come.
