Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) is set to expand its academic offerings with the introduction of several new postgraduate programmes aimed at enhancing professional and academic development.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Samuel E. Alnaa, announced the new initiatives during the university’s 13th Congregation ceremony, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to meeting industry demands and fostering skills development.
The proposed programmes include a Master of Technology in Hospitality Management, MSc in Management Studies, MSc in Marketing and Communication Studies, MSc in Accounting, MSc in Financial Engineering, and PhD programmes within the School of Agriculture.
According to Prof. Alnaa, these additions will provide critical progression pathways for students, equipping them with the necessary competencies for job creation and career advancement. He urged the public to take advantage of the opportunities available by enrolling in BTU’s expanding academic portfolio.
Staff Shortages and Financial Clearance Appeal
Despite the planned expansion in academic programmes, Prof. Alnaa raised concerns over the lack of a proportional increase in teaching staff.
He noted that the university relies heavily on existing lecturers and part-time staff, who are overburdened with heavy workloads. This, he said, negatively affects instructional delivery and student assessment.
“We implore the government to urgently grant financial clearance for the recruitment of additional staff to address this challenge,” he stated.
The Vice Chancellor emphasized that adequate staffing is essential to maintaining academic standards and ensuring the delivery of quality education.
Staff Development and Academic Excellence
Prof. Alnaa also highlighted BTU’s strides in staff development, revealing that the university currently has 42 PhD holders, 35 Senior Lecturers, 9 Associate Professors, and several administrative staff in senior positions. Additionally, around 55 staff members are pursuing PhD and Master’s degrees in institutions across the globe.
He encouraged faculty members to uphold academic integrity, engage in collaborative research, and pursue grants to elevate BTU’s academic reputation on the global stage.
“The world is highly competitive; we must excel in our vision and mission,” he stressed.
