The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Nabdam, Francis Yenwona Tobig, has pledged to build strong partnerships with agricultural officers, the Wildlife Division, and local community volunteers to address the persistent invasion of farmlands by elephants in the district.
Farmers, particularly those in Sakoti and surrounding areas, have for years suffered repeated destruction of their crops by stray elephants.
The most devastating incident occurred in 2020, when elephants ravaged farmlands estimated to be worth over GH¢80,000, leaving farmers devastated and exacerbating food insecurity in the area.
Speaking on A1 Radio as part of plans to develop the district, Mr. Tobig emphasized that resolving the issue requires concerted efforts from all stakeholders.
“This is a serious concern that calls for collaboration. We will work closely with agricultural extension officers, the Wildlife Division, and community volunteers to develop effective strategies,” he stated.
He added that traditional leaders would also be consulted to provide cultural insights and support in addressing the issue.
“The guidance of our chiefs is essential. We will also involve the youth in the communities, who are passionate and capable of supporting these efforts,” the DCE said.
Mr. Tobig acknowledged the continued efforts of the Member of Parliament for the area, noting his instrumental role in advocating for solutions and securing support for affected farmers.
“We believe that with all relevant stakeholders on board, we can find practical and sustainable measures to curb this annual threat to our food security and farmers’ livelihoods,” he added.
