After a transformative three-year tenure, William Nlanjerbor Jalulah has officially announced his decision to step down as Chairman of the Upper East Regional Branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), stating he will not seek re-election in the upcoming national and regional polls.

Mr. Jalulah, who has been widely regarded as a proactive and visionary leader, said his decision not to contest again is due to his upcoming indefinite relocation outside the region. His tenure is set to conclude at the end of June 2025.

In a statement issued on June 4, 2025, Mr. Jalulah expressed pride in what he described as a “very successful end” to his time in office, highlighting numerous achievements that have strengthened the role and visibility of the GJA in the Upper East Region.

“I have led an efficient Executive to spearhead numerous activities to promote journalism and empower members within the Upper East Region,” Jalulah said.

Milestones and Achievements (2022–2025)

Under William Jalulah’s leadership, the Upper East Regional Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) witnessed significant growth and development across several key areas. One of the most remarkable achievements during his tenure was the increase in active membership, which grew from just 16 at the beginning of his administration to 45 by the end. This expansion reflected a renewed sense of engagement and relevance among journalists in the region.

In terms of professional development, the regional GJA organized several capacity-building workshops to enhance the skills of its members. These included training sessions on fact-checking and conflict-sensitive reporting, supported by partners such as CARE International’s USAID AGREE Activity. These initiatives helped to strengthen ethical standards and reporting accuracy among journalists.

The chapter also made meaningful contributions to national media discourse by commemorating World Press Freedom Day with impactful events. A notable highlight was the 2023 public lecture delivered by Justice Charles Adjei Wilson, which centered on the theme “Freedom of Expression as a Driver for All Other Human Rights.” The event drew attention to the critical role of a free press in promoting democracy and human rights in Ghana.

Journalistic excellence was further celebrated through the organization of two GJA Regional Awards ceremonies, held in 2023 and 2024. These events recognized outstanding contributions to the profession, with more than 30 awards presented to individual journalists and media houses across both editions.

Beyond the newsroom, the chapter actively engaged the public through educational forums. One of the most notable events was a 2024 lecture on climate change and its impact on agriculture in the Upper East Region. The lecture featured key speakers, including Roy Ayariga, and attracted participation from high-profile figures in academia and the development sector.

To promote camaraderie and wellness among journalists, a keep-fit football team was established, allowing members to connect informally through sports. The team participated in friendly matches with professional groups and took part in notable tournaments, including the A1 Radio Invitational Football Tournament and events marking the 25th anniversary of Bolgatanga Technical University.

These efforts collectively marked a vibrant and impactful tenure, characterized by strong institutional growth, capacity building, and deeper community engagement.

A Call to Build on Progress

As he prepares to exit office, Mr. Jalulah called on the next Executive to build upon the gains made during his administration. He urged them to strengthen collaborations with civil society, corporate bodies, and state institutions to help tackle emerging challenges in the media landscape.

“The GJA Upper East Region has made substantial progress. The commitment to capacity building, recognition of journalistic excellence, and engagement in social and sports activities have fostered a vibrant and supportive environment for journalists in the region,” he noted.

He also expressed profound gratitude to GJA members, civil society organizations, businesses, government institutions, and development partners for their support during his leadership.

“Your support is so much cherished. I seek your continued support for the yet-to-be-elected executive,” Jalulah appealed.

Legacy of Leadership

Beyond his administrative accomplishments, William Jalulah will be remembered for revitalizing the GJA in the Upper East Region, prioritizing professional excellence, member welfare, and building stronger ties between the media and the broader community.

His leadership has left a benchmark for future leaders of the association, and his contributions are expected to have a lasting impact on journalism in the region.
