Renowned journalist and current Upper East Regional Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Sore, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of Regional Chairman in the upcoming June 30, 2025, GJA National and Regional Executive Elections.

In a press release dated June 5, 2025, Mr. Sore announced that he has successfully filed his nomination and undergone the necessary vetting process. His decision to contest follows encouragement from GJA members in the region who believe his track record makes him a strong candidate to lead the association into a new era.

Mr. Sore aims to build on the legacy of outgoing Chairman William N. Jalulah, who is stepping down after three years to take up a new role with the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) in Accra. Sore, who has been acting informally as chairman since Jalulah’s relocation, brings 14 years of experience as a journalist with Joy News, the Multimedia Group, and A1 Radio.

Outlining his vision, Mr. Sore emphasized six key priorities:

  1. Building a vibrant and visible regional branch,
  2. Establishing a GJA regional secretariat,
  3. Fostering partnerships for training and capacity building,
  4. Promoting active participation of female journalists,
  5. Developing a welfare fund for emergencies, and
  6. Significantly increasing GJA membership in the region.

“I come forward with a good track record,” he stated. “Together with the outgoing executive, we’ve grown membership from 16 to nearly 50, organized the 2023 and 2024 GJA Awards, and held major events like the World Press Freedom Day Lecture and Climate Change Lecture.”

Mr. Sore also highlighted his role in drafting successful proposals for funding and organizing regional training sessions for journalists. He promised to release a detailed policy document soon and expressed gratitude to the regional GJA membership for their continued support.

Albert Sore’s candidacy is widely seen as a continuation of the stability and progress achieved under the outgoing leadership, with a renewed focus on journalist welfare, inclusion, and professionalism. His campaign is expected to gain momentum in the coming weeks, with many regional journalists backing his vision for transformative leadership.
