The Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Simon Aworigo, has initiated an intervention to revive the long-abandoned Upper East Regional Innovation Center located in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality. The center, which was established eight years ago to promote ICT teaching, learning, and digital innovation in the region, has remained unused and deteriorating—until now.
Speaking during the official handover of the site to the contractor, Mr. Aworigo expressed optimism that the facility will become fully operational within the next six months. He said the revival of the center is being undertaken in partnership with the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), under whose mandate the project was originally conceived.
According to the MP, the renewed effort aims to enhance digital literacy, support coding and software development training for young people, and create a hub for skills development in the Upper East Region. “This center has the potential to transform ICT education and empower the youth with relevant skills for today’s digital economy. We are committed to ensuring it serves the purpose for which it was built,” he stated.
The Upper East Regional Manager of GIFEC, Martin Aberba, also expressed confidence that once completed, the center will significantly boost the government’s national coding initiative. He explained that the facility will provide a conducive learning environment equipped with modern technology to support training programmes intended to build the capacity of students and young innovators across the region.
Mr. Aberba further revealed that GIFEC is also working to restore several abandoned community ICT centres across the region. He indicated that while plans are far advanced, the full revival of these centres will require the active collaboration and support of various District Assemblies.
