President John Dramani Mahama is “very, very serious” about fighting corruption and has warned cabinet ministers they will face prosecution if they break the law, Attorney General Dominic Akuritinga Ayine has said.
Dr. Ayine, who also serves as Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga East, said President Mahama has repeatedly emphasized anti-corruption efforts in cabinet meetings.
“He’s told us that time without number in cabinet,” Dr. Ayine said in an interview with A1 Radio. “He even, one of the days, he jokingly said, well, if you don’t do your work well and you fall into the grips of the Honorable Attorney General, Dr. Ayine, I will leave you to your trouble.”
The attorney general said there would be no discriminatory treatment favoring members of Mahama’s National Democratic Congress if they commit offenses.
“It is when an NDC person in this regime commits an offense similar to Kwabena Adu Boahene, or any other of the persons that I am prosecuting, that people will see the difference,” Dr. Ayine said. “I will investigate as diligently as I have done, and I’ll go ahead and prosecute as diligently as I’m doing now.”
Dr. Ayine also defended his decision to discontinue several high-profile cases initiated under the previous New Patriotic Party administration, including the Saglemi housing project case and the prosecution of former COCOBOD CEO Stephen Opuni.
He said those cases lacked merit and contained fundamental flaws in how charges were filed.
“I assess each one of them,” Dr. Ayine said, noting he spent months reviewing inherited cases before taking action. “I drop them because they lack merit.”
