Preliminary results from a collation center set up to monitor and compile results for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the Jan. 31 presidential primaries indicate he has won the contest to become the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Addressing supporters at his campaign’s collation centre, where results from constituencies nationwide have been gathered and tallied, Dr Bawumia described the primary battle as “fierce” and paid tribute to the team that supported his bid.
“It’s been a fierce battle that we have waged across the country,” Dr. Bawumia said. “We would not have got here without the support of the team around here. You are only as good as your team in these matters, and I can say without any fear of contradiction that I have been blessed with an excellent team.”
The former vice president also thanked Members of Parliament who backed his campaign, saying they played a key role in securing his victory.
“The MPs who have stood by my side, I must say, have been phenomenal in this contest. They have really supported, and they have delivered what they promised to do,” he said. “I want to thank all the Members of Parliament who have supported me.”
Dr. Bawumia paid homage to previous NPP flagbearers, including Professor Adu Boahene, J. A. Kuffuor and Nana Akufo-Addo, saying their contributions laid the groundwork for the party’s growth.
“We are standing on the very proud shoulders of former flagbearers,” he said. “They have built the party, taken the party this far. It is really humbling that I have been elected as a flagbearer of the party to continue the work that they have started.”
In addition to party executives and MPs, Dr. Bawumia thanked security personnel and members of the media for their roles in ensuring a peaceful and transparent primary process.
His victory will now position him as the NPP’s standard-bearer ahead of the 2028 national elections, where the party aims to reclaim the presidency and majority in Parliament.
The NPP said final results are expected to be officially confirmed by the party’s Electoral Commission later today.
