An organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Talensi, Maxwell Chilembalem, has criticized the government over what he describes as delays in fulfilling key campaign promises on job creation, arguing that major employment policies remain unimplemented nearly two years into its term.
Speaking during a discussion on A1 Radio, Chilembalem pointed to the proposed Women’s Development Bank, which he said is yet to be established despite assurances to support women’s economic empowerment.
“You have failed as a government. You promised the people of this country, especially women, that you would establish a Women’s Development Bank. Nearly two years on, you are still telling them it is coming. You have failed—admit it,” he said.
He also raised concerns about the implementation of the widely publicized 24-hour economy policy, which was presented as a major solution to unemployment, particularly among the youth. According to him, the policy has not been fully rolled out despite earlier commitments.
“Your 24-hour economy that you promised the people of Ghana—one job, three shifts—where is it?” he questioned.
Chilembalem further indicated that expectations surrounding the policy contributed to the high number of young people applying for security service jobs, as many believed new employment opportunities would be created. He also questioned the level of funding allocated to the initiative, noting that although a significant amount was said to be required, only limited provision has been made in recent budgets.
“The head of the 24-hour economy secretariat said about $4 billion would be needed to implement it. Yet in the 2025 budget, it did not appear. It only showed up in the 2026 budget,” he said.
On security recruitment, he observed that although President John Dramani Mahama proposed an increase in recruitment numbers, only 5,000 positions have been budgeted for this year, suggesting that additional recruits may have to wait.
Chilembalem said the growing frustration among young people reflects unmet expectations, as many continue to demand the jobs they were promised during the 2024 general elections.
