A young woman has died in a road crash after she was allegedly chased by a police officer from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) in Bolgatanga on Monday morning.
The incident occurred at about 8:00 a.m. along the Tindonmolgo-Sherigu road near the Agaara Bridge, where the woman reportedly lost control of the Yamaha scooter motorbike she was riding after hitting a speed bump.
Eyewitnesses told A1 Radio’s Joshua Asaah that the deceased was riding an unregistered scooter when an MTTD officer, who was also on a motorbike, pursued her from the Bolgatanga township to the outskirts of the municipality in an attempt to arrest her.
According to the witnesses, the woman struck the speed bump near the Akamengre house, close to the Agaara Bridge, and crashed heavily onto the road.
They suspect she sustained severe head injuries and died instantly. Blood was seen flowing from her head and face, while bystanders covered her body with a piece of cloth as they waited for emergency responders.
Eyewitnesses further alleged that the police officer abandoned the scene immediately after realizing the severity of the accident and rode away on his motorbike.
Some youth from Tindonmolgo and other eyewitnesses reportedly pursued the officer, but he managed to return to the Upper East Regional Police Headquarters, where he sought safety after residents became enraged over the incident.
The Ghana National Ambulance Service responded to a distress call and arrived at the scene shortly afterwards. However, paramedics confirmed that the woman had already died and advised that the Ghana Police Service be contacted to convey the body.
A police officer later arrived at the scene in a police vehicle with registration number GP 3364. Residents assisted him in conveying the body from the scene.
As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the deceased and her place of residence had not been established. The Ghana Police Service is yet to issue an official statement on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The incident has sparked concern among residents, with some eyewitnesses calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the woman’s death and the actions of the officer involved.
