Janet Nabla, Leader and Founder of the People’s National Party (PNP), has announced plans to reduce the retirement age from 60 to 50 if elected President of Ghana.
This proposal follows a recent directive issued by the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, stating that all current and future requests for contract extensions involving retired personnel will no longer be considered.
However, Madam Nabla believes the current retirement age of 60 is too high and should be lowered to 50 under her leadership. The proposed policy aims to create more job opportunities for younger Ghanaians and enable them to contribute meaningfully to the economy.
“We are going to reduce the current retirement age from 60 to 50 when we come to power. This is to ensure that the backlog of unemployed youth can enter the workforce and serve Mother Ghana. Right now, too many older people are occupying positions and are unwilling to step aside. We must make room for the youth and provide appreciable retirement packages for the elderly,” she said.
The PNP leader also expressed concern about the current direction of Ghanaian youth. She cited, in particular, young men who engage in gambling and young women who spend excessive time on TikTok, emphasizing the need for guidance and support to help them make better life choices.
