Gospel Musician, Michael Oware Sakyi known popularly as OJ has said he will not give credence to the list of most played songs on radio released by the Musicians Union of Ghana.
The mother body of musicians in the country released a list of twenty most played songs on radio in the country. However, no gospel music could make it to the list as it was dominated by Dancehall and Hiplife.
Several gospel musicians and entertainment pundits have challenged the authenticity of the list considering the fact that gospel music dominates on most radio shows in the country.
Speaking on the subject on A1 Radio, OJ indicated that “well for me I don’t want to discuss it and never will I debunk it but you can’t tell me gospel music doesn’t have a stake as far as the playing of songs on air is concerned. Most of the shows use gospel. The drive time show starts with gospel and even the morning shows start with gospel“.
“If they are talking within a specific frame of time then it will be understandable but to lump the whole thing and say that upon the twenty top songs we had in the whole of 2017 none of the gospel songs was able to be featured in I think it is not something that I will give it so much of credence,” he told A1 Radio’s Kofi Asante.
He indicated that artistes like Joe Mettle, SP Kofi Sarpoing, Patience Nyarko and other gospel artistes had great songs in 2017 which dominated airplay and therefore could have fit in the top 20 songs played on radio.
