Customers of the Bolgatanga branch of Unibank in Upper East Region on Wednesday met with surprise the closure of the bank from morning to noon.

The bank did not serve customers as it normally does at 8 am until it finally opened at 12 noon. This change came as a result of a takeover of the bank’s assets and management.

The Central Bank at of Ghana at a press conference held earlier Tuesday announced that it had appointed KPMG as administrator of UniBank since the bank has become bankrupt.

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, explained that the decision was to save the bank from collapse.

But customers here in Bolgatanga who reported at the bank premises as early as 8 am Wednesday said they were told managers and workers of the Bank were in a meeting and would only attend to them at 12 noon.

When A1 NEWS visited the bank minutes after 12, noon, customers had already thronged to the banking hall to transact business.

A customer, Stanley Abopam expressed his disappointment stating “I think that, it is hurting and disappointing especially in a time where we are encouraging the growth and sustenance of made in Ghana business; this is the third bank to be folded up by the Bank of Ghana”

Mr. Abopam who rushed to the bank to also check to ensure his deposits are secured following news of the take, was optimistic that his deposits are secured but lamented that “people are yet to recover from the shocks that they suffered from DKM. I’m particularly not sure the Bank of Ghana can convince people to understand the security of their deposits and investments”

Another customers who want to remain anonymous said “the situation gives a bad name of the local banks but I hope they will be able to rectify things and give us a good deal because many people are not happy with what is happening”
