The Auditor General Department on Wednesday October 10, begun a payroll audit of 26,000 employees on the Government of Ghana (GoG) payroll in the Upper East Region. Prior to the start of the exercise, Auditor General, Daniel Domelevo, on Tuesday in Bolgatanga during the regional launch of the exercise, advised all government employees in the region to participate in the Nationwide Payroll and Personnel Verification Audit (NPPVA) so as to avoid their names being struck out of the payroll system.
The verification exercise is expected to end on Tuesday October 16, 2018 to pave way for a mop-up from 17 to 23 October, 2018 in the Bawku, Bolgatanga and Kassena-Nanka Municipalities.
He said the nationwide verification exercise is part of government’s radical steps to remove ghost names and over-aged workers from the country’s payroll.
Mr. Domelevo stressed that the extension of ages and forgery of documents by over-aged workers has made it difficult for more qualified graduates across the country to gain employment into the public service.
He said: “When the curtains fall, you must leave the stage, it is as simple as that. So when you reach your pension age, please go home, don’t go and falsify birth certificates and bring to us. We are going to collect a lot of them. We will show you later your true age. After the validation, people go through and say oh is that all? They don’t know that we have much information about them than they think we have. So when we finish, we will come back and challenge your information and say yes, you told us this but this is your true information. How come you have it here and there and there? We will give you all the information now otherwise you will know how to strategise.”
Mr. Domelevo reiterated his challenge to Ghanaians that if they do not want to retire at 60, they should change the constitution which provides that retirement age was 60 years.
