Former President John Dramani Mahama has stated emphatically that his decision and that of the National Democratic Congress to go to the Supreme Court to contest the 2020 elections is based on the “irregularities” that characterized the declared results.

Mr. Mahama has file a case at the highest court of the land in protest of the declaration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as president elect by the Jean Mensah led Electoral Commission.

The former Mahama in the petition wants the Supreme Court to order the Electoral Commission to conduct a run-off of the election.

Members of the NDC ahead of the challenge of legitimacy of the declared results on December 30th 2020, embarked on series of protest in some major cities in the country.

But Mr. Mahama stated that many people had questioned him on the purpose he and the party seeks to achieve in protesting the results.

But speaking for the first time after filing the case at the Supreme Court, Mr. Mahama said he want to remove all doubts associated with election results.

The NDC 2020 flagbearer said this in a brief address dubbed ‘Standing on Principle’ aired on live radio, TV and other media platforms.

“Let me tell you: I want, perhaps, the very same thing that my opponent wanted when in 2012 he challenged the results of that election; I want the removal of doubt. I want for all of us to know that our elections should be free, fair, and safe—and that we do not have to settle for a process that leaves us confused, and with more questions than answers.

“I want a Ghana where institutions of state can be held to account. Where we can stand on principle and demand transparency without the risk of losing our lives”, he said.

The former president added that he was “compel to do this because the EC chair has failed to do the right thing”.
