Children Parliament out-doored in Upper West Region

Upper West Regional Department of Children, and Pollie Kids, a Civil Society Organisation with support from Plan International Ghana have out-doored Children Parliament House in the region.

The initiative, aimed at providing platform for children to express their views on matters that affect their life and how it can be addressed.

Making a presentation, Upper West Regional Acting Director at Department of Children Madam Matilda Doopireh Chireh stated that, every child has the right to express their views on issues affecting them and for these views to be considered for decision making.

She said, children should be included in discussions on government policies across the various sectors in order to have their opinions for the betterment of their lives.

Children’s Parliament is an assembly of children to meet and discuss issues affecting them and issues of national interest.

The proceedings in children parliament vividly followed the normal parliamentary proceedings.

The Upper West Regional Acting Director of Department for Children Madam Matilda Doopireh Chireh, said the Department is to create a harmonious environment society with equity and equality among boys and girls for their survival, participation and development.

Madam Chireh noted that, the Children parliament will serve as a solid foundation to promote decision-making processes that are children inclusive and young people.

The Speaker of the Upper West Regional Children Parliament Miss Ibrahim Zakia, led the parliamentary proceedings.

Guli Naa Seidu Braimah Nubalanaang said as chiefs of the Region and custodians of the customary laws they will do everything possible to ensure that all outmoded cultural practices that have negative impact on children are scraped.

He said the future of the country depend on the children and if there is any effect in the training of the child then the nation loses.

Upper West Regional Labour Officer, Justice Opare cautioned parents against child labour.

The programme brought together students from various schools, teachers and stakeholders including, CHRAJ, NCCE, Traditional Leaders among others.
