Government workers who are on strike will forfeit their remuneration for the striking period as part of measures to honor Act 2003(Act 651) which states amongst others that a worker on strike “may forfeit his/her remuneration in respect of the period during which he/she is engaged in illegal strike”.

In a statement signed by Minister for Employment and Labour relations Hon. Haruna Iddrisu Tuesday, the statement said “Government is accordingly directing all heads of government establishments where workers have embarked on illegal (partial/full) strike actions to compile and submit to their respective Ministers of State the list of workers who have been absenting themselves from work as a result of a strike or protest”.

The statement further stated that “The compiled lists are to be submitted to the Ministry of Finance on or before Friday August 14, 2015 for necessary action”.

Currently, members of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) are on a nationwide strike which has entered its third week over conditions of service whiles the University Teachers Association of Ghana is also on strike over research and book allowance.

Government however has appealed to the striking workers to call off their strike and return to work whiles negotiations continue.
