The MCE for Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, Rex Asanga has expressed utter surprise at the sudden u-turn by the butchers on the relocation to the new abattoir at Yorogo, a suburb of Bolgatanga.

Mr. Asanga speaking to Samuel Mbura on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East explained that he was taken aback by the sudden change of stance within the ranks of the Bolgatanga Butchers Association due to the numerous engagements with executives of the Association. He said even more worrying is the fact that the Assembly has gone on to satisfy conditions that the butchers put forward.

He said the conditions, contained in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the executives of the Association, have been met, thus the shock that the butchers have still refused 3 deadlines to relocate.

“They were to move on December 15, 2021. They [the butchers] were the ones who suggested that we move it to January 1, 2022. Because of the holidays, we at the Assembly relaxed because we thought the complement of staff may not be in place to help them. Last week, the Municipal Security Committee met so that we can fix a new date and then they did not come to the meeting. The Committee went ahead to fix the 18th January 2022, which was yesterday. We wrote formally to them requesting that they move,” he explained.

He said the letter indicated that all Assembly staff who perform ancillary duties at the abattoir would be moved to the new facility at Yorogo.

The MCE said that the facility would remain under lock and key insisting that “they are not to operate from there so the facility does not have to be opened. We have provided them with another facility and we have negotiated with them. They are supposed to go to Yorogo, the modern abattoir”.

Mr. Asanga stressed that the Assembly would not operate two abattoirs in the Municipality. “We aren’t operating two abattoirs and we do not intend operating two places,” he stressed.

“The abattoir is in good condition. Everything is operational. The staff were there yesterday and nobody appeared, everything is in good order,” he added.
