The fight against Black Flies seems not to end anytime soon as residents of towns along the Red Volta continue to suffer bites from Black flies that invades the area annually due to failure of authorities to disinfect the water bodies intermittently hence providing a breeding grounds for the larvae.

The menace which is an “annual ritual” in towns along the Red Volta is worrying, considering how it affects productivity in these communities which are predominantly farming communities.

Kongo, a farming and mining community is one of such communities along the red Volta which is hardly hit annually by this menace.

A resident popularly known as Ashaiman who spoke to a1radioonline.com upon our visit to the area disclosed that, the last time the breeding grounds was disinfected was during the erstwhile Rawling’s administration.

He mentioned that, although a farming community, farming activities grinds to a halt by the invasion of Black flies in their farms.

He explained that the coming of the rains which is supposed to be a period where farming activities starts, residents, instead of going to their farms have to stay at home or risk been bitten by the irritating flies.

He said farming activities could only go on although partially only when the sun is scorching.

Night life, according to him, is never the same when the invasion begins.

He noted that residents who have their houses some meters close to the water body vacate their houses at night to escape the irritating bites of the black flies.

He impressed on authorities in charge of the area to undergo intermittent spraying of the water bodies in order for the flies to go extinct.

However, a1radioonline.com checks at the Nabdam District Assembly which is hit hard by this menace has revealed that, the district has taken delivery of chemicals to fight the insect invasion but lacks experts who will put the chemical to use.

Officials of the District Assembly say they are waiting on an expert from Accra but are unaware of when he is coming to the district to put the chemicals to use. District Chief Executive for the Nabdam District Hon. Vivien Anafo said the assembly is deeply worried about the situation and said it is threading cautiously to deal with the situation because any misapplication of the chemical may cause serious health complications for the people. She was however unsure how the disinfestation will be carried out because Nabdam is not the only community badly hit by the menace but all communities along the Volta Lake.

Until the expert arrives from Accra to disinfect the area, residents will continue to suffer bites from the irritating black flies.
